There are four standard lateral adjustment mechanisms, all of which are intended to connect to
rigidly mounted optical piping and to offer a means of moving a standard mounting thread for
positioning another unit from the range of beam delivery equipment. There are two sizes and two
classes of lateral adjustment mechanism. The two classes are ‘LAU’ and ‘LAM’. Lateral
Adjustment Units (LAU) move the output thread by contra-opposing three thumbscrews. Slight tilt of the
output thread can occur when the thumbscrews are loose. (This is not important where the thread is prealigned
to a beam using a crosswire, but has disadvantages if mounting a focusing head).
Lateral Adjustment Modules (LAM) have four opposing screws with bored-through heads to suit fine
adjustment by means of a tommy-bar. The mechanism is contained in such a way that tilt cannot
occur, and so ‘LAM’ mechanisms are more suited to provision of lateral adjustment for focusing
heads. The sizes are: ‘25’ size: with 52mm x 1.5 pitch female and (laterally movable) male threads
and: ‘38’ size: with 70mm x 1.5 pitch female and (laterally movable) male thread. Standard models

(The input-side thread is a free-rotating, female thread coupling ring).
